Thursday Thirteen - Central Park

tt_centralpark.jpg

1. On day three of our trip in New York City it was COLD! I wasn’t prepared for the cold front that came in so don’t look at my fashion statement in the pictures that follow, I had to use Big D’s suit coat to keep warm! shy My TT will be our tour of Central Park!

2. We decided to drive ourselves around instead of taking taxis. Big D can drive anywhere, he’s driven in LA, Chicago, Washington DC, you name it doesn’t bother him. So Manhattan wasn’t a challenge either. It actually made it more fun. Our first stop was by Tavern on the Green where we caught a horse drawn carriage to take us around Central Park.

3. Here we are, snug in the carriage. Boy was I glad we had that blanket!! When we started our ride two older men who were walking together waved at us and told us to enjoy our ride. No one can ever tell me that New Yorkers are not friendly, because it was like this our whole trip.

4. This is Mulligan, he was our horse that escorted us through Central Park. I fell in love with Mulligan. He had such a sweet soul. He also didn’t like it if another horse was going to be in front of him, we were always in the lead! He reminded me of Big D. -)

5. I had to take a picture of this because it was so “New York” to me!! Two dog walkers in Central Park, so cool! I laughed because the poor dogs were just standing there like, would you guys hurry up we have places to go, things to see, squirrels to chase!

6. We ran into Shakespeare while in the park, well, his statue that is. It was erected in 1864, it was quite impressive!

7. There were so many neat things in the park that I was just having fun watching the activity all around me. Even on this cold day the park was bustling. Next was the beautiful Bethesda Fountain, which you’ve seen in movies like Ransom and One Fine Day.

8. I am not a big John Lennon fan, but I did want to see Strawberry Fields, the section of the park that is in honor of him. A little history of this part of the park is that it is a 2.5-acre tear-drop-shaped landscape section that Yoko Ono, donated $1 million to the Central Park Conservancy to relandscape and to maintain after John’s death.

9. There is a black-and-white mosaic set in the pathway near its west entrance that is a reproduction of a mosaic from Pompeii; it was fashioned by Italian craftsmen and was a gift from Naples, Italy. Its single word IMAGINE, is the title of a popular Lennon song. When we arrived there was a group standing around the mosaic listening to a man speak, he was just finishing when we walked up. I’d have liked to hear what he was saying as everyone seemed moved by him. As you can see, the mosaic was decorated the day we were there. According to our carriage driver, not a day goes by that there is not flowers or candles lain on the mosaic.

10. If you remember when Lennon was shot, then you know he was shot outside the building he lived. This is it. They lived on the fifth floor at the time, overlooking Central Park. The gas lamps at the entrance stay lit.

11. This is the fountain that the friends of the show “Friends” were playing in during the opening credits. I couldn’t get a really good picture of the whole fountain because there were tables piled up around it and moving trucks parked by it. Apparently there was going to be an event in that spot later that evening. Would be a neat place for an event, as you get a beautiful view from there!

12. Do you recognize this building? If you have ever seen the movie Ghostbusters you should! It’s The San Remo and you get a beautiful view of it from Central Park. Bruce Willis lives in there as well as other well knowns. Must be nice!

13. This is just a little of our trip through Central Park, I hope you enjoyed the tour! Mulligan was awarded a bucket of oats for his wonderful touring skills when we returned. I believe that was his favorite part of the tour. -)

Sounds lovely! How wonderful to experience a US city as a tourist. We go to Europe and have a wonderful time…and I keep thinking that there is so much we haven’t seen yet in the US!

I loved these photos. You take lovely pictures. I’m especially impressed with the vibrant colors. I also liked reading about the lights being kept on in honor of Lennon. That was something I didn’t know before.

I took a trip and posted pictures at my Thursday Thirteen. You’re welcome to pop on by and take a look.

How ironic…I was just thinking recently how much I missed John Lennon, and what he’s be doing musically had he lived. Thanks for the beautiful photos.

Mulligan’s a doll!

The other Merseyside connection with Central Park (other than Lennon) is that the Frederick Law Olmsted who designed it was inspired by Birkenhead Park.

Looks like you had a good time -)

WONDERFUL! You’ve included some great photos. I would love to visit New York, but since hubby flies into there, I can’t convince him of that. I’m just going to have to show him this Central Park tour! Maybe that will work innocent Thanks so much for including the Dog Walker photo, you are right. That does seem so New York. You don’t see Dog Walkers around here in Fort Worth.

What a fun idea for a trip and post. I don’t think I realized how many landmarks there are in the Park.

The “Imagine” mosaic is beautiful as are all of your photos. It is obvious you are having a Blast! Enjoy!!!! thumbsup

Thanks for the vicarious tour- I haven’t ever been in Central Park, but I’ve always heard about the places you showed!
Your escort, Mulligan, looks like a real gentleman (wonder if there was any good Irish whiskey in those oats?)

I didn’t get to see “IN” Central Park…it was SO COLD when we were there we just drove around it. I hope to get back there…thanks for taking us there though through your pics. Lovely!

LOVE your tour of Centeal Park, Dear YR….What a great trip you had….And Mulligan is dear! Next time, do eat at Tavern On The Green….So much History….And that Mosaic is such a beautiful tribute to Lennon…! The Dakota is the name of the Building that I believe Yoko Ono’s still lived—where they lived when he was alive. It is a very famous building, too, like The San Remo….All these buildings have such a wonderful history….And I agree, New Yorkers are very very friendly….Everyone moves fast, but people are truly nice! smile

I love New York! My husband and I were there in January and ate lunch at Tavern on the Green. We also saw “The Color Purple” on Broadway. We hope to take advantage of some cheap plane tickets in the future for a long weekend trip since you can fly direct from Knoxville to NYC. Sounds like you are having a marvelous time!
