Summertime, when I think of summertime I think of lemonade, suntans, sandals, watermelon, Bar-B Q’s…..just to name a few things. But it was in the summer of ‘83 that I met the man of my dreams. We call it our magical summer.
I had just graduated from high school. I was feeling so grown up….I knew it all, you know. As a gift from my folks I was given a plane ticket to Texas to stay with my aunt and uncle for a month. I was really looking forward to this trip, as I loved going to Texas and plus I was wanting to take a break from my current boyfriend. Timing is everything, as they say!
I was going to spend my summer in Texas, and I was excited! My uncle was a pastor at the time and was going to be working in youth camp the second week I was there, so I was going with him. I was a little leery because I really didn’t know anyone, but I knew that I’d do just fine, I make friends fast…I didn’t need to worry.
My second day in Texas a very good looking, dark haired young man had come to the door at my uncles. My cousin who was around four at the time piped up and said, “YellowRose, your boyfriend is here!” Now mind you, I had never met nor seen this dude before!! So after getting over the embarrassment, I was able to get to know this handsome man.
The following week we went off to youth camp together, and since we rode together we had a lot of time to talk and talk we did. He was so easy to talk to and I had never been able to be so open and speak that freely with a guy before. At camp, we soon became, “The Couple” and had several tell us they thought we’d end up married.
The last night of camp as Big D was walking me to the girls cabins he told me he loved me under the big full moon. I was falling fast….and deep. I finally knew what “love at first sight” meant!
Within four weeks of my arrival in Texas, my life had changed! I was madly, deeply in love with the man of my dreams. He asked me to marry him four weeks after we met. I said, yes!! By then his folks were behind us 100%, so they provided me with a car, and a place to live till the wedding.
My folks I don’t think were too shocked when we took them out to eat, to share the news with them. They were in town on vacation, and I was suppose to go back home with them when they went home. But I had already gotten a job, and made arrangements otherwise. We were determined. We were in love.
I was getting married. I was moving to Texas. All this in one summer!!! And what a summer it was!! The summer of ‘83 is when I became a believer in “Love at First Sight!” I still believe in it, it’s been 23 years and we are still going strong!
So when I hear that song from “Grease” that says….Summer loving, had me a blast, Summer loving, happens so fast!…I know exactly what it means!

I love romantic stories like this!
I think this is my first time visiting your site…love the music, by the way! I’m older than you by just a couple years but my kiddies are still little- only 7 and 4! (I didn’t meet my real sweetheart until after age 30- better late than never, in our case!)
Blessings,
~Tammy

I have a love at first site story too… My husband and I were in class together for a month - but only spoke about class things (such as in small groups) for that time. I sat next to him for evening services, and 3 days later he asked me to marry him. 3 months later we were married. 8 years and two kids later - still going strong.

That is so beautiful - how wonderful!!! And you were so young! My parents would have freaked out. How great that your parents were all so supportive.

Wow…whatta story! Gosh, you were soooo young, but when it’s “the real thing”, what can you say? It took me and my husband five years to decide
…but we’ve been going at it almost 19. Thanks for dropping by Pensieve (I’ll be back to YellowRose)
