I’m a little late today…..sorry! The header picture is one I took at the Georgia Aquarium. I didn’t like the jellyfish!
Did I ever tell you about my experience with a jelly fish? Since I mentioned Miss Priss was stung last week while she was at the beach, I thought I’d share my experience with you for my Monday Memory.
I had gone to Texas for two weeks to stay with my aunt and uncle when I was sixteen for a summer vacation. I loved visiting them and it was always so much fun for this girl from Chicago to visit Texas! I loved it! Probably one of the reasons I ended up marrying a Texas boy!
One of the things I really wanted to do was go to the beach. What teenager wouldn’t? I had made friends with a gal from my uncle’s church and so he took her and I down to Galveston so we could swim and play on the beach for the afternoon. I remember my excitement, it was a beautiful day, big fluffy clouds in the sky, and I would hang my head out of the car to take pictures of them. Typical teenager.
Once we got to the beach we couldn’t get in the water fast enough! We were body surfing and my friend had just told me to be careful of jellyfish…..not five minutes later something grabbed my leg. When I say grab, I mean GRABBED, this thing was huge…it wrapped around my leg and I screamed. I tried to kick it off with my other leg, but it wrapped itself around that leg also, now was being pulled under water, while screaming!! My uncle was not swimming with us, he was in jeans sitting on the shore, but he heard and saw me. It felt like forever, it had pulled me under several times, but I finally got it off. My uncle had run into the water and carried me out. He had thought I was being attacked by a shark. I guess my screams were quite loud!
My legs were covered in stings, they started swelling right away and the pain…well it was intense. My uncle stopped at a store and bought meat tenderizer and made a paste to apply to my legs. When we returned home I had to soak in ammonia and water to draw out the poison. I remember being really sick for two days and then I was back, to my spunky self, pestering my uncle to do something else! Though I didn’t ask to go back to the beach!

Ouch! I feel your pain. I don’t remember ever gotten stung like that. I used to play with the jellyfish and hold them in my hand. I guess it’s a different type maybe?
I’m up.

Now, that is why I will NEVER swim in the ocean!
Great story, but it made me shudder! I have a phobia of the ocean, not the beach, the ocean. I like it as long as I do not have to go in it.

I know exactly how you felt. I was attacked too around 10 years ago. The name of the jellyfish is Portuguese Man of War.
Incidents like this are not only memorable but traumatic. I have not been to a beach since then.
Nice choice for MM.

WOW! That must have been some GIMONGOUS jellyfish! We just get little ones in the Chesapeake Bay… I have seen some in the Atlantic ocean that are maybe the size of a softball — but to pull you under - that must have really been BIG! I think that would have cured MY love of the ocean forever!!!

Was never stung by a jellyfish but my sister was and it was horrible. Her legs really became red and swollen and she nauseated. She was brought to the emergency and was treated there. She could not wear dresses for a quite a while as the marks were still there.
Mine is up too.
BTW, I have an email for your re ….. you know what.

OUCH…I have been to the beach several times now since living here in Savannah but have yet to see those creatures but have been warned. I never get in the water. I just love walking along the beach. I would have been scared to death and never went back in again if that would have been me. WOW!!

YIKES! That would be scary. I’ve only seen one jellyfish and from a distance well over 20 years ago when DH & I went to Florida for our honeymoon.
Sure does not sound pleasant with what you had to endure.
My MM is up too.
