Movie Review – “Memoirs of a Geisha”

Haven’t done a movie review in awhile, so here’s one…..if you haven’t seen “Memoirs of a Geisha” see it! I read the book, which was absolutely excellent and I hated it when I finished the book. So much so that I even dreamt about the characters that night….I really loved the book that much.

So I was really looking forward to watching this movie. It was very good, but as what happens with most movies adapted from novels, it didn’t hold a candle to the book. They have to leave so much out of the movie that was in the book that I actually felt cheated. If I hadn’t read the book first, it wouldn’t have made such a difference, but I had so it did. Big D enjoyed it, though there were times I had to explain the storyline, because it wasn’t quite clear. Goes back to feeling that they left out too much from the book.

If you haven’t seen the movie, watch it. It’s really a beautiful piece of work. If you haven’t read the book, I recommend you do so also. It is something you won’t be able to put down.

Have you seen this movie yet? What were your thoughts?
(I just realized I think I say “book” a hundred times in this post….oh well, you get my point, right? LOL)

Every movie adapted from a book seems to be a poor subset of the original literary work. There’s just no way a huge tome can be condensed down to 2 or so hours of film.

Regardless, you’ve convinced me to add this to my short-list of must-watch movies. Thanks!

Haven’t seen it (or read it)… must get around to it! Hello via Michele!

I read the book and found it absolutely fascinating, as you did. I then heard Diane Sawyer say on GMA that it was a beautiful movie to look at, and that they would surely win the cinematography award at the Oscars. I can’t wait to see it.

oh honey – how long is it since I visited!! -( (

                  Bad Queenie…..

I ADORED both the book and the movie Memoirs of a Geisha.

It made me laugh that such a song and dance were made about having Chinese actresses in a Japanese story – but the book is written by a Brit!! -)
